Upgrades in Progress

I’ve decided to make some long overdue changes to the blog this week. We have been stuck with WordPress 1.5 for ever and I’ve just upgraded to 2.2. I’ve been putting off the WordPress upgrade for ages because I keep reading about horrible things going wrong. In reality, it’s pretty easy to do as long as you take the trouble to read the upgrade guide at the WordPress site and follow each step correctly.

Needless to say, this has broken some things so there may well be some strange things going on here for the next few days. Please bear with me – the new theme looks really nice. Now if I can only get everything working again…..

One of the nice things about using an opensource product like WordPress is that there are plenty of resources available – often for free. The theme I’m using for the Unique Blog is by Brian Gardner and is his Vertigo theme (actually it’s his Blue Vertigo theme but using his standard Vertigo graphics). Thanks Brian – I really like your work!

One thing I don’t like about the new theme is that it doesn’t automatically scale my images as the old one did. I have to get this figured out.

OK, so progress is being made. It seems that the new theme has columns just over 500 pixels wide. Since it won’t dynamically resize my larger size images to fit, I’ll simply make the images so that the longest side of them is exactly 500 pixels.

I run the images through a Photoshop action to put the bloggie frame and logo on them, so I’ve modified the action to make the image fit in a 500 pixel square. This means it works on both portrait and landscape images. The landscape one above worked fine (yes I know I’ve already posted this image, but I really like it so here it is again). Now I’m off to try a portrait.

So here’s Phillip striking a pose to help me get this right.

OK, good news, everything is working fine. I can now use Photoshop to automatically size the image or I can edit the size in WordPress – best of both worlds.
