Using the Light for Drama

Directional light is great for adding depth and drama to images. Here are a couple of examples of our bride Dana where I’ve been able to take advantage of the light that was available to me to be able to get some interesting images.

For this first shot, Dana was strongly backlit by a tungsten lamp right behind her. Tungsten lighting causes an orange cast in most images which the photographer will often want to remove with a white balance adjustment. For this image, I not only kept the orange glow, but actually enhanced it. A pretty severe curves adjustment added a lot of contrast as well.

The result is one of my favorites from the wedding.

For the second image, the light was all from the window to the bride’s right. The drapes acted as a large softbox creating a soft diffused directional light. Like the first image, this one was treated to some of my custom processing and had a similar curves change to add some nice contrast.
