Flippin It !!

Em took the photograph of this rather good looking photographer. She’s getting pretty good at this photography thing. All I need to do is get her to point the camera in the general direction of the bride (rather than at me) and we are all set.

“What’s the strange thing on your flash?” I hear you cry.

This is the latest in a long line of light modifiers I have used to try and get the look I want when I have no choice but to use flash lighting. So far this device, called the Flip-It (yes really!) is working out really well. I’m hoping it will mean I don’t have to lug my heavy Really Right Stuff brackets around anymore.

The problem with using flash is that it’s such a small light source so it creates a nasty harsh light with horrible shadows. That’s why in the studio we use umbrellas and softboxes to create large more diffused light sources. The Flip-It attempts to create the illusion of being a large source and generally seems to get away with it. It’s quite remarkable what can be done with a bit of plastic and some velcro.

The Flip-It was invented by Joe Demb, a photographer right here in the Boston area. Want to improve your own flash photography? Get your own Flip-It here: http://www.dembflashdiffusers.com/

Have a great holiday weekend!
